At Rockville Rocks, we believe in the transformative power of art. Our goal is to inspire creativity and connect with the community through unique designs and artistic expressions.
In March of 2017, our family embarked on a cross-country adventure from California to Maryland, traveling in our trusty Toyota Sienna, 'Pearl.' Along the way, we stumbled upon a few painted rocks, including a YouTube symbol perched in a tree in Simi Valley, California, and others at Trinity Lake, Mt. Shasta, and various rest stops in New Mexico. These chance discoveries sparked a sense of wonder and joy in our family.
However, life had other plans. In the midst of our rock-finding journey, I experienced a devastating loss – the tragic passing of my mother, Tina McCreery June 19 2017 (Kurzendoefer), a US Army Veteran.
Little did we know, this journey would become a catalyst for something more profound.

In March 2018, we started the Rockville Rocks Facebook page, inspired by The Kindness Rocks Project. Our mission was simple: to spread peace and joy, one painted rock at a time.
In remembrance of my Mother and Her love for painting, passion for Paint and Sip nights has become a cherished memory, her painted pictures she painted for me an my daughter are a daily reminder of her love and I've found solace in continuing her creative legacy.
As I navigated the grieving process, I found comfort in painting rocks, not only as a tribute to my mother but also as a way to heal and find peace. The discovery of painted rocks leading up to her funeral and beyond became a poignant reminder of the kindness and compassion that surrounds us.
As our family continued on our journey starting new in Rockville then Gaithersburg we discovered another special place that resonated with our kindness mission - Mattie J.T. Stepanek Park in Rockville, Maryland. Our family fell in love with this park in 2019, and it quickly became our favorite spot. The kids affectionately nicknamed it the "dog park" due to its wonderful dog park area and the beautiful statue of Mattie with his dog.
We've had the pleasure of meeting the inventor of the Bank Shot game at the park and have enjoyed celebrating Fourth of July there every year. But what's more remarkable is the connection we made with Jeni Stepanek, Mattie's mom, also known as Mama Peace. She invited Rockville Rocks to be part of Mattie's Birthday Peace Day celebration in 2024.
Although the event was delayed due to heat, it allowed us to create hundreds of Mattie Peace Rocks and participate in a peace activity. I had the privilege of getting to know Mama Peace personally, sharing a cup of tea, and hearing her inspiring stories. Her inner peace, joy, and love for her children radiate from her being.
Sharing Mattie's poems and books with my own children has been a precious experience. I'm currently working on becoming Peace Certified, and this journey has been truly life-enriching. The intersection of our Rockville Rocks journey and Mattie's legacy has been a beautiful reminder that kindness, compassion, and peace can be found in the most unexpected places.
Today, Rockville Rocks has evolved into a vibrant community, driven by a passion for art, kindness, and connection. Since 2018, we've shared over 2500 painted rocks, each one a symbol of hope, inspiration, and the human spirit. As we continue on this journey, we invite you to join us in spreading peace, joy, and spark kindness, one rock at a time.
At Rockville Rocks, we believe in the power of art to inspire and connect. Our journey began with a passion for creativity and a desire to bring unique designs to life.
